We explore alternate uses for your leftover coffee grounds.

After enjoying a delicious pot of coffee (Boca Java brand of course), you find yourself left with a dilemma. How to best deal with the byproduct of that tasty treat. Sure, you can simply empty them into the garbage, to be driven away to a landfill (which I’m pretty sure is the reason for rowdy seagulls… they’d probably be much quieter and more orderly if they weren’t hyped on caffeine), or you can make use of them in some pretty interesting ways.

I think most people know the value of coffee grounds as compost, adding nutrients to the soil and improving the growth potential of plants (just be careful about using too much caffeine, lest you wind up making them as rowdy as those seagulls). However, I’m guessing you didn’t know that used coffee grounds are actually an excellent cleaning agent. For instance, you can use those coffee grounds to make soap. It will remove many caked in substances – most likely because what the dirt really wants is some coffee for itself.

Okay, maybe you knew that one. Did you know that coffee grounds can be made into clothing? According to the company, coffee grinds from one cup of coffee can be used to make two t-shirts. Not only that, but you get to have one of your favorite things rubbing up against your skin all day. It’s like a massage, only it lasts all day!

Coffee is also a great deodorizer, either in bean or ground form – though if you are going to use the grounds you’ll want to dry them out first. The wonderful aroma of coffee tends to overpower most lesser smells, as they submit to the awesomeness that is coffee. Here’s a great how-to.

This last one, I found online – and I’m not convinced that it really works – so if you have any experience with this please comment below. Apparently, coffee grounds work great for removing cellulite. That’s right ladies, drink a cup of Boca Java and then use the leftovers to trim away at the bane of your physical existence. Take a look at this article for instructions – according to the comments here it really does work.

These are just some of the ways we can reuse coffee grounds, to keep those poor seagulls from winding up in the throws of caffeine addiction*. Do you use coffee grounds for anything not listed here? Let us know in the comments.

* this statement is likely not true, and is intended purely as satire.

Coffee is everywhere in music. Here are 15 songs, each from their own genre, about our favorite thing.

Let’s face it, people (ourselves included) LOVE coffee. Some people, who happen to be talented in creating music love coffee so much, they WRITE SONGS about it. Following is a list of some songs about or featuring coffee – including their genre. All of these tracks can be found at Amazon’s MP3 store for .99 each.

The Coffee Song by Ralph’s World (Children’s Music)
Kind of unexpected to find a coffee song written for children. Cute.

Coffee Shop [Feat. Gorilla Zoe] (Amended Album Version) by Yung Joc featuring Gorilla Zoe (Hip-Hop)
You can do much more of a 180 from the Coffee Song. This is the amended version – there’s an explicit version also, but Boca Java is family friendly.

The Coffee Song by Frank Sinatra (Sinatra)
Yes, we’re giving Sinatra his own genre here. Is there anyone quite like him?

Coffee by Supersister (Dance)
They like their men like they like their coffee. Do you?

Black Coffee by Peggy Lee (Jazz)
If you like sultry jazz, and you like black coffee, you’re bound to like this song.

Black Coffee by Heavy D. and the Boyz (Rap)
Similar to Supersister, Heavy D. likes his women like he likes his coffee.

Smellin’ Coffee by Chris Rice (Alternative)
Has more of a country twang to it, but its got a good pace and it’s got a focus on coffee, which automatically makes it awesome.

Coffee Beans by Itamar Sagi (Techno)
No lyrics to this one, but if you focus hard enough on the sound, I bet you’ll smell the beans.

One More Cup of Coffee by Bob Dylan (70’s Pop)
It’s Dylan.

Coffee and Deep by Gianluca Corvesi (Dance / Electronica)
No lyrics to be found here either, but the song is going to be released on a charity album that donates money to Haiti. You can find it on Amazon here. If you like electronic dance, this one’s for you.

What I Want is a Proper Cup Of Coffee by Trout Fishing In America (Folk)
This is a light, fun song about something we all want.

Coffee Workers Song / Work Song with Leader / Jamma-Jamma (medley) by Coffee-Sifters Working At The United Africa Corporation Warehouse In Bamenda (International)
The people who actually work to provide us with delicious coffee, singing on the job. Beautiful.

Coffee Song by Jars of Clay (Christian)
No religion in this song, just a solid ode to black gold.

“Coffee Cantata” BWV211 – Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht…Hat man nicht mit seinen Kindern by Emma Kirby (Classical)
This is a performance of a score by J.S. Bach. Yes, even he was inspired by coffee.

Coffee Mug by Descendants (Punk/Rock)
If you like your songs about coffee hard and fast, this one’s for you.

Do you have any you’d like to add? Comment below.

Did you know? Dark roasted coffee is less acidic. Find out why.

If you love coffee like we do, you may or may not have already known this through sheer experience – but now this article over at Wired explains the actual science behind the fact. In case you don’t feel like doing that much heavy reading, the basic gist is that scientists first used different chemicals to measure the compounds created by the roasting of coffee beans. They found that darker roasting created more of N-methylpyridinium, a chemical which appears to help prevent the stomach from creating as much acid in response to ingesting coffee. Coffees with higher NMP caused less stomach acid creation, and coffees with lower NMP caused more.

A second study is now underway using a swallowed sensor that measures the stomachs pH (acid levels) and sends the readings to a computer. Early results corroborate the initial chemical testing.

So what does this mean for you? If you are on a low-acid diet or a sensitive stomach – our darker roasts may be worth a taste.

Ron Sas, Director of Brand Development here at Boca Java, was joined by Coast FM’s Julie Guy and Tamara G (Those Two Girls in the Morning) for an appearance on NBC 6 Miami this week during a feature on the Coffee for a Cause charity partnership between us. The way-cool charity effort involves the Coast FM on-air personalities and their very own coffees, blended by Boca Java. Those Two Girls in the Morning have “A.M. Girl Power Grind,” Donny Michaels has “Donny’s Vanilla Bean Dream,” and Gnarly Charlie has “Gnarly’s Charlie’s Dark Chocolate Wave.” It’s a contest to see which coffee is most popular, with $1 per bag sold going to local charities. This month’s charity is the Michael Brewer fund—the young man who was seriously burnt over approximately 80% of his body recently here in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Our very own Ron Sas recently made an appearance on NBC 6 Miami during a feature on the Caravan of Joy Toy Drive for charity. We provided bags of our oh-so-delicious coffee as an incentive to get folks to stop by with a toy. Watch the Youtube clip below:

Earlier in the broadcast, Boca Java received some love from the NBC 6 Miami anchors. Highlights are around the 2:15 mark, but the preceding story is more information about the Toy Drive -- and while you may have missed it this year, if you live in Florida and want to help out -- it may be worth considering for next year. Click here for more information on the Caravan.

The initial goal of an ambitious one million cups has now exceeded an extraordinary six million cups

Boca Java has passed the 6 million cup point of coffee sent to troops serving overseas.

In 2003, Boca Java, Inc. began an initiative to donate their fresh-roasted gourmet coffee to U.S. troops serving globally. What launched as “Operation Million Cup” was such an overwhelming success that its initial goal of an ambitious one million cups has now exceeded an extraordinary six million cups. The program continues to enjoy major support from Boca Java customers.

“We’re at a point where we’re pinching ourselves to see if this is all just a dream,” said Kevin Holbrook, President, Boca Java, Inc. “Our customers have risen to the occasion of helping us support the troops to such an unimaginable extent that it really does seem like a dream. With their help, we have been able to bring so many of our soldiers some comfort from home.”

The company matches customer donations of coffee bag for bag and ships it at its own expense to troops all over the world. They even feature a coffee blend developed with US troops in mind called “Brew of Bravery.” Responses from service people are received on nearly a daily basis-soldiers routinely express their surprise and gratitude for the unexpected coffee packages. In the words of Lt. Col. Mitch B., “There are two things I look forward to in the morning: a good cup of Joe and no reports of injuries during the night.”

“You have no idea how much a simple cup of good brewed coffee means to the men and women serving in these very dangerous and harsh environments,” said Holbrook. “We proudly hang the American flags they send as thanks from the ceiling of our facility-flags that were flown in Iraq and Afghanistan. Seeing them is truly a majestic, emotional experience. Every single one of our employees is passionate about the program, and we have constant reminders of why we will continue to serve even more.”
